it’s quite often an expression of trust

because a poem or a story or a painting are often things that come from the heart

little pieces of the artists themselves

and if they’re willing to share it with you

you should appreciate it

Edit: I guess I’d also like to add, that the artist also likely trusts your taste. That you can give a proper critique. I would never ask someone that primarily reads erotic, urban fantasy to read my sci-fi horror. That way madness lies.
